Branding for health and wellbeing companies

You’re asking wary people to trust you with something personal, and they can spot a brand that’s guessing. We help health and wellbeing companies sound expert and warm at once, with names, identities, voices and websites.

What we’ve learned

Wellbeing brands lose people when they sound either clinical or cosy.

Someone choosing a mental health app, a dentist or a coach is already a little exposed. They’ve usually tried something that didn’t work, and they’re quick to spot a brand that reads like a hospital leaflet or smells like a scented candle. Plenty of health brands drift towards one of those two voices because it feels safe, and it tends to leave the buyer exactly where they started.

The way through is usually a clearer point of view, said kindly. For North, a psychologist-led self-help app, we wrote a voice that is calm, confident and down to earth, with guidelines that talk about someone living with anxiety rather than calling them anxious, and 3D illustrations that always play darkness against light. For Breeze, a patients-first dental practice in Austin, the job was carrying a care-first promise onto the web and into booked appointments.

Care has to sound like it knows what it’s doing.

How we help

A name and an idea people can hold on to

Naming and brand strategy that find the one idea a wary buyer can lean on, tested against competitors, web addresses, social handles and trademarks.

For example: North, and its line, withstand the storm

Identity and voice that feel human

Visual identity, illustration and tone of voice that feel warm and credible, never clinical and never twee.

For example: North’s light-ray identity and 3D illustrations

Websites and apps for difficult days

Website copy, UX and UI for products people open when things aren’t great, planned around each group you serve.

For example: North’s website, written for members, employers and healthcare providers

I’m just blown away by your creativity, all the worlds that you’ve presented here. I’m getting more and more scared of my own potential. Honestly, it’s absolutely beautiful.

Branding a health or wellbeing company

How do you brand a mental health or wellbeing company?

+

Start with the person on the other side of the screen, who is usually tired, wary and has tried something before. For North, a psychologist-led self-help app, we built the brand around one line, withstand the storm, wrote a calm, confident and down to earth voice, and set out person-centred language, so North talks about someone living with anxiety rather than calling them anxious.

Can Outfly name a health or wellbeing brand?

+

Yes, and naming is often where we start. For North, a psychologist-led self-help app working under the temporary name WithSto, we explored four routes, Lightmind, Aralia, Bearing and North, and tested each against competitors, web addresses, social handles and trademarks. North won because it suggests travelling onwards towards your north star, with a stoic, resilient quality.

How do you stop a wellbeing brand sounding clinical or cosy?

+

Give it a clear point of view and let the design follow. North set out what it stands for, science-backed guidance, non-judgement and safe spaces, and what it stands against, wishy-washy advice, quick fixes and jargon. Its identity follows suit: a calm blue and purple palette with a hint of turquoise, and 3D illustrations that play darkness against light.

Which health and wellbeing companies has Outfly worked with?

+

Our health and wellbeing work includes North, a psychologist-led mental health app we named and branded, from its identity and voice to its website copy and app design. We have also built the website, CRM, analytics and paid media for Breeze, a patients-first dental practice in Austin.
