Branding for charities and social impact organisations

Charity marketers know how easily people look away, and most causes get a nod and a scroll. We help charities and social impact organisations build campaigns that interrupt an ordinary day and give people something to do next.

What we’ve learned

Awareness only counts when people know what to do next.

Most people already know that modern slavery exists, that young women are harassed on their way home and that Disabled people are shut out of too many workplaces. Knowing stopped being the problem a long time ago. The harder part is making an issue feel close enough to stop for, then handing people a step small enough to take on the spot.

Our social impact work starts from that step. For One Family, we turned a cheap manicure and low-cost building work into five walk-in scenes across the City of London, with a passport of stories people could take away. For Safe & the City, we timed ads for Friday and Saturday nights, when people were out, and asked them to report what they saw. For Disability Rights UK, we built a TikTok strategy that meets young Disabled people where they already spend their time.

Make it close enough to stop for, and simple enough to act on.

How we help

Campaigns people stop for

Campaign ideas, experiential design and film that bring a hidden issue into the places people already walk past.

For example: One Family’s walk-in scenes on modern slavery

Brands that speak to more than one group

Identity systems and messaging that work for the people you serve, the people who back you and the community around you, all at once.

For example: UNSEEN Impact, built for founders, investors and the startup community

Digital work that reaches new people

Social and content strategy, app design and paid campaigns that meet people where they are and give them a clear next step.

For example: Safe Starts Here, 420 app installs against a target of 325

Branding for charities and social impact

How do you make a difficult social issue feel close to home?

+

Start where people already are and interrupt something ordinary. For One Family’s campaign on modern slavery, we drew people in with familiar offers, a cheap manicure or low-cost building work, then revealed the human cost inside five walk-in scenes across the City of London. A passport of stories gave them something to take home, and a clear next step: spot it, stop it.

Can a social impact campaign be measured?

+

Yes, and it should be. Safe Starts Here, our campaign with Safe & the City, three London councils and the Met, beat its targets for clicks and installs: 420 app installs against 325, and a 2.44% click-through rate against a 0.97% benchmark. Android downloads were 113% higher than in the four weeks before, while deletions stayed almost the same.

How should a charity approach TikTok?

+

Start from your values rather than the trends. For Disability Rights UK, we built a TikTok strategy around the charity’s own principle, nothing about us without us. Half the content educates, 30% uses trends to show everyday Disabled experience, and 20% invites people into campaigning, with captions on every video and a playbook the team could film from.

Which charities and social impact organisations has Outfly worked with?

+

Our social impact work includes Safe & the City, a personal safety app; One Family, on modern slavery; Disability Rights UK; and Hatch Enterprise, where we designed brand and marketing workshops for every stage of its Female Founders programme. We also built the brand for UNSEEN Impact, Outfly’s own initiative for underserved founders.
